  • Pre-Purchase Survey/Condition & Value

One of the best investments you can make when purchasing a boat is a pre-purchase survey as this allows you to get an in-depth report of what may be wrong with the boat, if anything, and how to best move forward should you choose to purchase it. Hiring an accredited marine surveyor is a great way to gain a detailed understanding of a boat before purchasing it, and this can help you in determining if you should buy it at all.

    (Includes sea trial and appraisal)

  • Damage Inspection

The surveyor can be retained by an insurance company to determine the cause of a loss and determine the extent of loss related damage and may be asked to recommend repairs, review estimates, and determine the pre-loss value of a vessel. A vessel owner can retain a surveyor for the same purposes, but for the owner’s behalf.

  • Insurance Survey

This inspection is performed so that the insurance company can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats. They will also want to know the vessel’s fair market value.

  • Outboard Compression Test

A compression check can indicate that the piston rings are working properly and that the cylinders are in good condition. The test measures how much pressure is built up by the motion of the piston inside the cylinder, given in pounds per square inch (PSI).Understanding how the test works will let you evaluate what a mechanic tells you.

  • Appraisal Inspection

This inspection is performed to gather enough information to justify or determine the fair market value of the vessel. This is normally needed for financing, estate settlements, donations and legal cases.

  • Sea Trials

Sea trials are your chance to review every aspect of the boat that you are thinking about buying. Before conducting your sea trial, is it important to have a list of the systems and processes that you want to review to ensure that you don’t miss anything.

A sea trial is your chance to ensure that the boat is everything that you are looking for and that you are happy to move forward with the purchase. Boat sale contracts will sometimes include a clause that will make the sale subject to a successful sea trial whereby the purchaser can void the sale if issues come up during the trial that they were not previously aware of such as wear and tear, damaged systems or new systems that are not running properly.

  • Collision & Accident Investigation

If you've been in an accident or have sustained some damage in an incident then we can help you is assessing the damage and getting your ship back to its best condition.

What is a marine surveyor?
Marine surveying is a detailed inspection of a boat to determine its current condition and seaworthiness. When you choose Aqua Marine Surveying and Services LLC your marine survey will be done by an accredited, diligent, intelligent and honest marine surveyor. In particular a marine surveyor evaluates a boat to determine if the vessel is safe to use in the conditions for which it was designed, and what maintenance or repairs are required, or are likely to be required in the near future.

Most buyers are not experienced enough, or mechanically inclined to a point where they can make an adequate evaluation on their own. Even those who are qualified will benefit immensely from a second opinion from an unbiased, professional marine surveyor.

Why should I hire an accredited marine surveyor?

The short answer is to stay alive, physically and financially. The open water can be a treacherous place. It is no place for a deficient boat, especially one with an inexperienced owner and an inept crew. And, as the old saying goes, a bad boat is a hole in the water that you pour money into.

To hire an accredited marine surveyor is to buy some peace of mind. It will give you a better idea of exactly what you are getting into with your boat purchase, and help you learn what will be necessary to maintain the vessel in the future to keep you and your family safe, and your investment secure.

The longer answer is certain types and makes of boats have recurring problems or requirements. An accredited marine surveyor will be familiar with most models and be able to advise you on the long term suitability of your intended purchase and its equipment, particularly in relation to how and where you will be using it.

In addition, it is unlikely you will be able to secure insurance or financing without providing the insurance company or lender with an acceptable survey, meaning it may be in your benefit to incorporate the cost of a marine surveyor into your budget.
